FDA approved Genentech's Avastin for treatment of Colon cancer (Feburary, 2004). First Anti-angiogenic drug in clinic after many years of research pioneered by Dr. Judah Folkman.

FDA approved Genentech's Lucentis (ranibizumab injection) for treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration in June, 2006. Avastin and Lucentis are both antibodies against VEGF.

"Angiogenesis: A Boost for Tumor Starvation" (Science 2003 301: 452-454), an article reviews anti-angiogenic drugs in clinical development, especially Avastin, which is expected to gain FDA approval in 2004. Avastin and other drugs will finally prove a theory that cancer can be treated by blocking its blood vessels, which was first proposed by Dr. Judah Folkman forty years ago.
